Charity Auction
2019: Phyllis Opolko Silent Auction
Last Update: June 21

Phyllis Opolko Silent Auction

Phyllis Opolko was Senior Marketing Manager for Alliance Game Distributors, but beyond that she was the heart and the soul of the company in many ways.

A true industry veteran, Phyllis helmed the sales efforts for many years at Avalon Hill, one of the first true hobby game publishers. When Avalon Hill sold to Hasbro in 1998, Alliance was lucky enough to have her join the team. From the time she joined the company, she left a lasting impression on Alliance itself and everyone she worked with. Phyllis created Game Trade Magazine, she led the marketing efforts of the company, and was the architect of the Alliance Open House. She passed away in 2013, leaving a Phyllis shaped hole in all of our hearts.

It was Phyllis who decided that our show should make a difference in the world, and she created our charity auction to give back to those in need. It is in her honor, and in the spirit of her enormous heart, that we have dedicated the Phyllis Opolko Silent Auction to her memory.

Alliance will once again offer our retailers the opportunity to bid on rare and uncommon gaming items donated by our sponsors. We're proud to support three incredible charities this year; Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Toys for Tots, and ProLiteracy.

2019 Charities

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the First Amendment rights of the comics medium.

Their work takes them into courtrooms, classrooms, conventions and libraries all over the United States where they provide legal aid, education, and advocacy to protect the First Amendment rights of the readers, creators, retailers, publishers, and librarians of comics, manga, and graphic novels.

Since 1986, the CBLDF has managed and paid for the legal defense of individuals whose First Amendment rights are threatened for making, selling, or even reading comic books. We also provide free referrals for cases before they rise to the level of a court challenge.

The CBLDF works independently and with coalitions to fight unconstitutional legislation that would affect how comics are made and distributed.

The mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is to assist the U. S. Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas.

This assistance includes providing day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Program, raising funds to provide toys to supplement the collections of local Toys for Tots Campaigns, to provide promotional and support material and defray the costs of conducting annual Toys for Tots Campaigns.

Other Foundation support includes providing administrative, advisory, financial, logistic and promotional support to local Toys for Tots Coordinators; managing funds raised and monies donated based on the use of Toys for Tots name or logo; providing other support the Marine Corps, as a federal agency, cannot provide; and conducting public education and information programs about Toys for Tots that call the general public to action in support of this patriotic community action program.

ProLiteracy promotes adult literacy through content development, programs, and advocacy. Our goal is to change lives and communities through the power of literacy.

In 2002, Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, two of the world’s oldest and largest adult literacy organizations, merged to create ProLiteracy. The merger created more educational opportunities for adult learners through an expanded national network and new international initiatives.
